Summer’s End
Perfectly Sweet June 13th, 2005
… and what better way to say goodbye to sweltering days than by indulging in a large mug of ice cream! What I had was the ordinary on-the-street sorbetes peddled by the sorbetero pushing his cart, with the seeming ceremony of announcing his arrival with a bell.
Melon and mango, those are the flavours in the mug. In Santa Rita, the sorbetes is not just some artificially-flavoured concoction but home-made ice cream. One can even taste and feel the morsels of the fruits used.
The Pilgrim is off doing interviews, this entry shall be continued soon.
P.S. Kongwi, if you’re reading this, perhaps you can help me with the entry by telling us who was your favourite sorbetero, maybe the one stationed at the side of the church in front of your house, and the flavours you chose from his cart. Hehehe!

hi karen, my all time favorite siempre would be the buko laced with dayap rindfollowed by the queso-nangka (yanka) flavor. we used to have these flavors year-round. but now its the ubiquitous chocolate and the buko with milk. althouh you can still order the special queso-nangka from the magyeyelo in palengke. i also remember when i was young there is this game we play with the sorbetero wherein we drop a five-centavo coin in a jar filled with water. inside is a small jar (a small empty pomade jar), if your coin drops inside, you get a free cone. i didn’t realize then that for an extra 5 centavo i could get a cone.

Mmmm, home made mango ice cream! I made a mango sorbet recently and it was so flavorful I can never have the artificially flavored ones again!

Schatzli, I believe the bell is part of the mystique. Why else would there be a song “Mamang Sorbetero”? Hehehe!
Kongwi, I think your all-time favourite is the town’s too. Most people I ask would name it as theirs. The heirs of Tatang Paen (the ice seller in the market) are still at it and their calapiñeras are always fully booked. I missed renting one by minutes last fiesta!
Stef, chocolate na di lasang chocolate? I think I’ve tasted something like that too. What could it be? Ultra dark tea? Hehehe!
Stel, cheese with pinipig and buco bits does sound luscious! Naku, I’ll try to find a way to recreate that in the coming duman season. Ayayay! My mouth is watering just thinking of that concoction! Will be posting another ice cream/sherbet/sorbetes entry soon.
Lynn, mango ice cream is always a winner! I personally favour fruity flavours over anything. No nuts either, thank you! Read your ice cream entry. I actually planned of posting one using the traditional maker, the one which is churned manually but I wasn’t able to book one. I still hope to do so in the future.
Ramil!!! Why were you the sorbetero’s favourite? You must’ve been a cute first grader! I’m sure you’re enjoying your mom’s cooking. Till when will you be in the country? Or out already as I type this?
